The Prestonsburg community is mourning the tragic and sudden loss of Damon Adams, 22, who drowned Friday evening at Dewey Lake in Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, leaving family, friends, and loved ones in deep sorrow.

According to officials, emergency responders were dispatched at approximately 7:22 p.m. after a 911 caller reported seeing Adams swimming in the lake before he suddenly went underwater and failed to resurface. The call triggered an immediate and coordinated emergency response as crews rushed to the scene in hopes of locating him.

A large-scale search and rescue operation was launched involving multiple agencies, including the Prestonsburg Fire Department, Prestonsburg Police Department, Floyd County Rescue Squad, Floyd County Emergency Management, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. During the operation, Lake Road (Route 302) was temporarily closed to allow responders safe and unobstructed access.

Despite extensive efforts, Adams was located at approximately 8:48 p.m. in the main channel of Dewey Lake. He was recovered from the water and pronounced deceased at the scene.

News of his passing has left the community shaken, with family, friends, and residents remembering him through shared memories and struggling to process the sudden nature of the tragedy. The incident has also deeply affected first responders who worked tirelessly during the search and recovery operation.

As the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources continues its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident, the community has come together to support Damon Adams’ family during this difficult time.
