OHIO — The University of Toledo community is mourning the tragic loss of freshman student-athlete Eva Jae Moran, a member of the women’s track and field team, who died Friday following an automobile accident in Marion County, Ohio.
Moran, a promising pole vaulter and health sciences student, had recently completed her first season with the Rockets and was admired for her determination, kindness, and positive spirit. Her sudden passing has left teammates, coaches, classmates, and family members devastated as they reflect on a life cut far too short.

In an official statement, Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland expressed the university’s deep sorrow, noting that Eva made a meaningful impact on everyone who knew her. He extended condolences to her parents, Alena and Derrek Moran, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kya, asking the community to keep the family in their thoughts during this painful time.
Coaches and teammates described Eva as an athlete who continued to grow rapidly throughout her collegiate career. During her freshman season, she posted strong performances, including a personal-best 3.57-meter vault at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, ranking among the top marks in program history. She also earned notable finishes at several meets, demonstrating both talent and consistency as a rising competitor.
Before joining the University of Toledo, Moran built an impressive high school career at River Valley High School in Caledonia, Ohio. She was a multi-sport athlete in basketball, cross country, and track and field, but excelled particularly in pole vaulting. She qualified for the Ohio State Track and Field Championships multiple times and set the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference record, establishing herself as one of the region’s standout young athletes.
